Batman is still one of the most popular superheros of our time, in fact he is timeless and will no doubt carry on well into this new millennium.

Batman begins in the detective comics issue No27  from the late 1930s and was called The Batman and was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger and Bruce Wayne has never looked back. The Batman was from the start a different type of superhero as he possess no superpowers at all  he  has is his intellect and super honed powers of crime deduction and with that and his great wealth and scientific technology it is with these powers that batman uses in his power struggle with the forces of evil in Gotham city.  Batman always appears in public in his batman costume with his trusty side kick Robin the boy wonder by his side to fight the villains of Gotham city Which include such distasteful and despicable characters as the Joker , the Riddler , the Penguin and Cat Woman the mad hatter just to mention but a few.

The 60s Batman TV series with Adam West (who now does the voice of mayor west in family guy) as Bruce Wayne as batman and Burt Ward as robin, very rapidly captured the imagination of the 60s generation and that fascination with Batman still continues to this day, The high moral stance that the Batman took in the 60s series went a long way in teaching children wrong from right , which some people today feel is missing from some of the current crop of children's superhero programs, Every week there would be two batman shows shown on tv each episode ending with a huge exciting cliff hanger and instructions to tune in same bat time, same bat channel.  But Just as you think batman has gone away, the Batman returns with a whole new generation of big budget Batman films such as Batman, Batman returns, Batman and Robin, Batman beyond and Batman forever and the new up and coming Batman feature film the Dark Knight ...and finds new fans all over the planet! There is a whole culture devoted to collecting Batman merchandise, Batman collectibles and Batman toys and games. also there is a thriving bat fan community who regularly dress up in their favourite batman costume and go to Batman conventions. Batman is big business!

The Batmobile is the crime fighting gadget packed car that Batman drives and has gone through a few costume changes itself over the years from the Batmobile of the first black and white film series to the well loved  Barris 1966 batmobile  to the 1989 Keaton batmobile to its newest incarnation the tumbler. in the next Batman movie Batman will be riding the bat-pod a two wheeled machine gun bristling, crime busting machine,

Batman also has other forms of transport such as the batbike the batplane and the batboat. Another iconic instrument from the series and movies is the bat signal this is a huge searchlight with the bat symbol on the lens that is used by the Gotham city police to contact batman by shining the powerful  light on to a cloud in the sky illuminating the said cloud with a huge bat symbol.

 Batman also has apart from Robin, Batgirl to aid him in his quest. The underground layer where Bruce Wayne conducts his crime fighting from is called the batcave and houses a huge amount of crime fighting bat-equipment not to mention the source of power for the bat-cave .. the nuclear bat reactor also in attendance is batmans faithful and quintessentially english butler Alfred Pennyworth, also very popular were the  batman and robin sayings  that batman fans would recall the next day in the school yard or at the office water fountain. another thing fans do is to learn how to draw batman and robin or the bat logo.

Also Batman had a car/mobile phone when it was "cool" to have one!, he even has a reverse phone look up facility to find out who was on the other end of the phone line. Batman is a master of martial arts and one of the greatest criminologists the world of crime has ever encountered, he does not drink nor smoke and is a crime-fighter truly worthy of the title .. Superhero.
